Opening a checking account

AlexA checking account is just as easy to open as a savings account. In fact, opening a checking account will probably require the same IDs as you need for a savings account. But before you and your parent or guardian heads to the bank, be sure to ask what information they require.

What you need

A parent or guardian must accompany a person under 18 and must bring 2 forms of current identification, with photo, including:

  • Driver’s license or State ID
  • Passport
  • U.S. Military ID
  • Alien Registration card
  • Matricula Consular card

OR bring 1 item from the above list and a major credit card or gas card.

You may be asked to provide 1 of the following current IDs with photo, such as:

  • Student ID
  • Passport


  • Social Security number or Tax ID number (TIN)
  • Money to deposit — ask if there’s a minimum.

Each bank has different requirements, so ask your local bank.
